What is an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeship is an industry-driven, high-quality career pathway where employers can develop and prepare their future workforce, and individuals can obtain paid work experience, classroom instruction, and a portable, nationally-recognized credential.

There are five key components of a Beauty Trade Apprenticeship. These components differentiate apprenticeships from other types of workplace training programs in several ways:

APPRENTICESHIP FAQs

What is a Hair Design Apprenticeship?
The Hair Design Apprenticeship offers an alternative pathway to obtaining licensure in the Beauty Industry. This program focuses exclusively on hair and its associated safety practices, unlike Cosmetology School, where students must also master a broader range of industry skills. Apprentices in this program are employees who gain hands-on experience in the beauty trade while earning a wage. In addition to their practical work, our apprentices follow a job-related curriculum to ensure they meet the necessary standards to achieve their professional license.
Is an Apprentice a Licensed Stylist?
Our Hair Design Apprentices are diligently working towards completing 1,200 hours of in-person and online education required to obtain their Washington State Hair Design License. Once they fulfill these state requirements, they are eligible to take the State Board Exam. Upon passing, they will receive their official Hair Design License, marking the start of their professional journey in the beauty industry.
What Kind of Work is Expected of an Apprentice?
A significant aspect of our apprenticeship program involves assisting all stylists during regular salon hours. During your appointment, you may receive services from both your stylist and their apprentice. As apprentices advance in their curriculum and pass tests administered by our educators, they are authorized to accept their own clients under the supervision of an educator present in the salon. Additionally, apprentices take on responsibilities such as coordinating appointments and maintaining salon upkeep, ensuring a smooth and professional experience for all.
Who are the Apprentices Learning From?
In addition to completing an online curriculum, each apprentice benefits from mentorship, ongoing education, and one-on-one support from our Atarashii Approved Hair Educators. Apprentices also participate in additional education classes led by hair educators and specialists, offered both virtually and in-person, to further enhance their skills and knowledge.
Can Apprentices Take Clients?
Absolutely! Through our Apprenticeship Program, our apprentices are legally permitted to perform services on clients. They begin by observing and assisting experienced stylists, gradually progressing to practicing various techniques on real clients. This unique educational experience allows our apprentices to learn directly from seasoned professionals while providing our clients with high-quality services at an affordable price.
Can Apprentices Accept Tips?
Absolutely! Each apprentice is employed, receives an hourly wage, and gratefully accepts gratuity for their services.
